    Sanibel is know for its natural beauty and laid back lifestyle. Relax on our 14 miles of shell strewn beaches, bike on the 24 miles of paved pathway, hike and look for wildlife at Ding Darling National Wildlfe Refuge. Take beach walks to trail walks, boat tours,kayak through miles of mangrove trails

    There is a wide variety of cultural and educational experiences available to residents and visitors of the islands.

  • Island Services

    Sanibel was incorporated as a City in 1972. The City Government Complex houses the Police Department, the Finance Dept., Building and Planning Department and City Council Chambers. Public works and the Sanibel library are located adjacent to the City Hall complex.

    The island has several fire stations with emergency services, an urgent care center and a number of healthcare facilities equipped to handle minor emergencies.

    The island is also home to a number of service organizations. FISH, Friends Who Care, International Rotary Club, Kiwanis, Lion Club, NBWA and Zonta all provide valuable community services to Island Residents.

    Sanibel and Captiva are home to many fine restaurants. Ranging from casual family dining to fine dining. Many restaurants feature fresh local seafood.

    The public school on Sanibel is operated by The District School Board of Lee County.The school houses grades K-8. There are several pre-schools on the island. There are many schools, both public and private in Fort Myers as well as several colleges. Florida Gulf Coast University is a fast growing State University featuring a NCAA Division 1 Sport Program. All Florida schools are required to have students take the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Tests (FCAT) in order to measure the performance of Florida schools and the comparative rank of Florida students.

  • Transportation

    The island is accessed via a three bridge causeway from the mainland. Traveling the streets and roads of Sanibel is relatively easy. Other than high season, January-April, traffic is very manageable. While there is no municipal mass transit service, the privately operated Sanibel TROLLY combines hop-on, hop-off transportation with a narrative about the history and attractions of Sanibel.

    Airport Transportation services are also available as well as a number of private limousine and taxi services.
